By taking an oblique view of the German Jewish wartime experience, here as exiles in Africa, issues such as identity, culture and racism could be approached in a fresh way. With incredible skill and passion, Nowhere in Africa manages to bring you fully into every change in this family's life; it richly deserves the Academy Award® it received in 2002. As the war starts they are arrested, the man being sent to a prison which is not that bad really, and the family are put up in luxury! This is a resonant setting for a movie, but there’s something too refined and emotionally neutral about Nowhere in Africa, as if Link had directed with white gloves.
