The book centers on Charles Ashworth, a doctor of divinity who is commissioned by the Archbishop of Canterbury to investigate the Bishop of Starbridge's private and potentially scandal-filled life. The year is 1937, George VI's Coronation year, and Dr Charles Ashworth, a Church of England academic has been sent by the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Cosmo Lang, to spy on the Bishop of Starbridge (Salisbury in the factual world), Dr Alex Jardine, to see whether there is any way in which he could embarrass the Church of England by attracting press headlines because of his possibly colourful private life. I got through about a quarter of the book and set it aside.
