When the Park’s driver takes her home, Ki-jung leaves her underwear in the car in order to get him fired: she then suggests her “Uncle” as the new driver – who is really Ki-taek. Mr. and Mrs. Park end up sleeping in the living room in order to keep an eye on Da-song who is camping out in the backyard, forcing the Kims to stay under the table, frozen all night, even as the Parks complain about Mr. Kim’s smell – and then later, have sex. Ki-woo vows to one day earn enough money to purchase the mansion and free his father. Mrs. Park faints as Mr. Kim flees. He wants Ki-woo to be her tutor, knowing he will watch over her so that Min-hyuk can propose to her once she graduates high school. Mr. Park screams at his driver, Mr. Kim – who is trying to stop Ki-jung’s bleeding – for the car keys to take his son to the hospital, and he throws them to him. Ki-woo’s wealthy friend Min-hyuk pays the family a visit, giving them a gift – a rock that is supposed to bring those who have it wealth and prosperity. Ki-woo writes his father a letter back, resolving that someday he will become rich enough that he can buy the house and their family can be reunited. The Kim family, in their roles as help, are invited and have to pretend that they don’t know that there are two people locked in a bunker under the house. She goes to her husband, Geun-sae (Park Myung-hoon), who has secretly been living in the bunker every since the previous owner moved out in order to hide from loan sharks. As she begs Chung-sook to keep their secret, the eavesdropping Kims accidentally stumble into view. The next day, Mrs. Park decides to throw an impromptu party for Da-song. As Mr. Park retrieves the keys, he recoils from Geun-sae’s smell. She manages to kill him by stabbing him with a meat skewer. Once Ki-woo is hired, the rest of the Kims successively pose as sophisticated skilled workers, unrelated to each other, and integrate themselves into the lives of the Parks: Ki-woo begins a romantic relationship with Da-hye; Ki-jeong poses as an art therapist and is hired to teach their son, Da-song; Ki-taek is hired as a chauffeur after Mr. Park’s driver is fired when Ki-jeong frames him for having sex in the car; and Chung-sook is hired to replace the current housekeeper, Moon-gwang, after the Kims exploit her allergy to peaches, claiming that she has tuberculosis. Min-hyuk suggests that Ki-woo pose as a university student to take over his job as an English tutor for the wealthy Park family’s teenage daughter, Da-hye. That night, Moon-gwang returns, claiming that she left something in the basement.
Ki-taek, witnessing Mr. Park’s reaction to the smell, fatally stabs Mr. Park before fleeing. Weeks later, Ki-woo awakens from a coma and is sentenced, along with Chung-sook, to probation for fraud; Ki-jeong has died from her wound. She claims she was fired so quickly she left without being able to get something and just wants it back. While watching the Parks’ recently sold mansion, Ki-woo notices a light flickering in Morse code – a SKATS message from Ki-taek, who now lives in the bunker. When the Parks return, Mrs. Park tells Chung-sook that her son was traumatized years earlier by seeing a “ghost” emerge from the basement: Geun-sae.
Geun-sae’s sudden appearance triggers Da-song’s traumatic memory, causing a seizure. The Kim family manages to get the upper hand on them, getting them into the secret bunker, but the Park family calls: they’ve canceled their camping trip due to rain and will be home in eight minutes. The Kim family, consisting of father Kim Ki-taek, mother Chung-sook, son Ki-woo, and daughter Ki-jeong, live in a small semi-basement apartment, working low-paying temporary jobs and struggling to make ends meet. Ki-woo’s friend Min-hyuk, who is preparing to study abroad, gifts the Kim family with a scholar’s rock that is supposed to bring them wealth. Da-song had a traumatic incident where he saw a “ghost” in the house and had a seizure and has been needing help with his art. Chung-sook manages to kill Geun-sae with a meat skewer. Bong Joon-ho ’s masterful film Parasite is a wicked and brutal satire about wealth disparity. They make ends meet by doing menial tasks such as folding pizza boxes – and even then, get criticized by the pizza employees for messing up the boxes. Ki-woo returns to the bunker with the scholar’s rock but is ambushed by Geun-sae, who hits him over the head with the rock. Geun-sae’s motive and the whereabouts of Ki-taek, who is wanted for Mr. Park’s murder, are unknown. Ki-woo knows he isn’t qualified since he isn’t in college, but Min-hyuk promises to vouch for him, and so he agrees and has Ki-jung forge accreditations for him to take to his interview. They manage to do a good enough job that the rest of the family is able to hide while Mrs. Kim gives the Parks their dinner – when Moon-kwang breaks out and runs upstairs, Mrs. Kim shoves her back down the stairs, where she hits her head and is severely wounded. They return home to find their apartment completely flooded with rain and sewage. He finds out that Ki-jung has died, and he and Mrs. Kim are sentenced to probation. The Parks suddenly call, informing Chung-sook that heavy rain has ruined the trip and that they are arriving home shortly. She gives him food while Mrs. Kim looks on in horror – she tells Moon-kwang she needs to leave, and as Moon-kwang begs her to let them stay, the rest of the Kim family (who had been eavesdropping) falls off the stairs and into view – and they call each other “dad”, etc, which Moon-kwang films on her phone, realizing the con the family has pulled. Eventually, in the dead of night, they are able to sneak out. There has been no sign of Mr. Kim, even though the police have been searching for him for Mr. Park’s murder far and wide.
