It starts with a premise I was excited about, looking at the Palestinian diaspora but disappointed on all levels. It’s fiction, sure, but it opened my eyes to a world I didn’t know much about. Part 1 ends as Isra delivers her daughter Deya, to Fareeda’s chagrin. Nope. I was surrounded by strong liberal women, my mother being the first and foremost. This book was like a rose, beautifully layered petals revealing the inner truth behind a small family looking to marry off their eldest daughter to a Palestinian suitor. The novel is broken into three parts, but for the purposes of this guide will be broken into eight sections.
Eighteen-year-old Deya, Isra's oldest daughter, must meet with potential husbands at her grandmother Fareeda's insistence, though her only desire is to go to college. They go to Jerusalem to get her visa, and have a big wedding celebration. This is a heartbreaking story of three generations of Palestinian-American women in one family..who have been oppressed by their culture. Isra and Deya are constantly reminded that “marriage is what’s most important for women” and domestic abuse is a fact of life as women are at the mercy of their husbands.
