Having read almost all of the works of John Le Carre, I decided to read this, his first novel, where the character is first introduced. The author's writing style was superb and worth savoring in even his first books. A little spoiled having seen "A Deadly Affair" back in the late sixties in the UK and revisited with a download Amazon copy a year ago. I may have ruined my enjoyment of the later books in the series by reading the last one first, but at least I can say I have given Le Carre a run for his (my) money! To be honest it does get draggy with all the internal conversation. If you're new to le Carre this isn't a "typical spy" thriller - it's a leisurely journey with George Smiley as he unravels the case systematically, eliminating suspects methodically. Yes, there’s a twist, of sorts, but by now you will have got there already. The book was written quite a while ago so some of the references may be a little hard to follow, but I think it still holds up fairly well. If you have not read a Smiley book, I'm not sure this is the place to start. Why would someone book a call and then kill themselves? These characters feel so rich, their world so immersive, and the dialogue so natural…if this is how le Carré first dipped his toe into the spy story business, I can’t wait to read more. ( Log Out /
