The Acme Bookstore sequence is classic! There are differences in style and story line between the two versions especially the emphasis in the relationship between Marlowe (Bogart) and Mrs. Rutledge (Bacall). The quality of the Blu-ray transfer is excellent - much better than any of the previous versions. Is it worth paying for the blu-ray? Great remaster, also has 1945 pre-release version which gives fascinating insight into how the best artistic people in the movie industry can work. So many murders that even the screen writers weren't sure who killed one of the victims. The Big Sleep (1946) is film noir at its finest. The Chandler classic and wonderful Bogart in the lead, it could not miss. Rentals include 30 days to start watching this video and 48 hours to finish once started. What I really appreciated most about the film is its humorous undercurrent, with sexually suggestive dialogue at times throughout the film that's not in bad taste. The bluray version is excellent in both sound and picture quality. This film is eye candy without the color; it has the classic film noir darkness, suspense, mystery, and femme fatale. The reason to have this in your collection is the husband/wife team of Bogart and Bacall, one of the best and oddest romantic teams in film in the forties.

I think it took me until my third viewing to really be clear of the basic setup of the plot and even then there were loose ends and lingering questions about some of the characters. This was never released, for reasons explained in a very informative documentary included on the disc. For those who are not aware, the bluray of this brilliant film noir is region free and contains the theatrical cut in HD and the pre-release version in standard defination as a special feature which is fascinating as this was quite possibly the first film to do reshoots before anyone even heard of the term. Love it more everytime I see it---and its been many! Both the prerelease 1945 version and the theatrically released 1946 version are included.
